About Me

Hi, I’m Ryder.

I’m a world traveler, graphic designer, camp counselor, scientist, immunologist, student, teacher, pilot, and whatever else I decide to be this week.

I was born in Canada, but call quite a few places around the world home. These days, I’m currently hanging out in Toronto, Canada. I’ve been fortunate enough to take advantage of manyย opportunities placed in front of me, and have created some opportunities of my own by living and working abroad.

I’ve got an educational background in science, and am currently working on my graduate studies in Biomedical Engineering. For a while I was working out of the field, travelling around and doing various jobs you can expect a world traveler to do (Cruise ship work, Teaching English, etc). As of right now, I’m settled in Toronto, Canada, but that might change tomorrow. In fact, it changes so often I built a WordPress plugin to dynamically change my location on these pages.

I can hold conversations in English, French, Spanish and Mandarin, but to be honest, I usually speak English while I’m travelling. I’ve never run into an absolute need to use another language (except maybe in rural China).

I’ve travelled all around the world, and I want to show you how it can be easier than you might think. I started my blog, RYDAWAY, as a way to remember all my travels, tell my stories, and offer advice to anyone who happens across it.ย Feel free to leave a comment, ask questions, or share anything that I’ve posted here. Best of luck, and happy travels!

Where I’ve Been

While I haven’t been everywhere, I’m working on it! The more I travel, the more I realize there’s so much to see. I’ve got two continents left to do; South America, and Antarctica. I’m currently in Toronto, Canada.

So far I’ve visited 40 countries. Click on them below to see some of my posts:

RYDAWAY started off as an old blog when I first started travelling, back on blogger.com. As I got a little more serious, I bought my own domain (rydaway.com) and migrated the site to WordPress, using the WordPress.com platform. What started as a personal blog to tell my friends back home about stories, soon developed into a platform to assist other travellers (though you can still find some of my very old blog-style posts if you look hard enough).

Eventually, I decided to make the switch to a self-hosted blog using a shared hosting company. Soon after, I started to build a WordPress theme (with PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript) myself specifically for the site. I also built a few plugins (Wander: which you can see demonstrated on this page showing the map and the list) to help me manage the site. Most recently I’ve moved the site to its own cloud server that I manage myself (not for the faint of heart). Credit to the name of the blog goes to my friend Rachael, whom I backpacked Indonesia with, and who taught me British Sign Language.
